Although its resemblance to an igloo is inevitable, building it in the southeast of Spain is not the most advisable. On the other hand, it is to build a house like this, based on geodesic geometry, a construction system that allows to mount domes quickly and economically, forming habitable spaces.

There are examples of geodesic houses in our country, but in general they are private initiatives that have not followed the procedure to comply with building regulations, and they do not incorporate the necessary facilities to guarantee that the house is self-sufficient. "So this is probably one of the few cases of geodesic and self-sufficient housing in Spain," says Pablo Carbonell, architect of Ecoproyecta, the study commissioned, in collaboration with Moho Arquitectos, of the design of this house located in Yecla (Murcia).

Living under a dome with their three children was the wish of Abijah Benjamin Roberts and Rachel Stokes. "When we chose to live in this part of the world, we already knew we wanted something other than 'normal' and that is why we chose to build our home under a dome and on the side of a mountain as a natural addition to the landscape," explains Stokes.

Another reason for this marriage is the predominantly economic factor: "We wanted something affordable and a dome uses little material to get a large space and, consequently, its cost is lower than for a conventional home", adds Roberts.

The geodesic structure manages, on the one hand, to reduce the amount of material used (wood in the envelopes and the structure, and natural cellulose as thermal insulation), and, on the other, to build in a short space of time, since much of the work is carried out in workshop and then assembly is systematic. "The forecast is to have it fully completed in less than four months," says Carbonell. Although the dome rises in just four days, the cladding and interior layout, installations and finishes require more time.

The inherent resistance of the dome, almost 12 meters in diameter, capable of withstanding the onslaught of strong winds and even earthquakes, gives the house a lot of rigidity without the need to use excessive wood in its construction. But it is also light, very resistant to the weights it must bear. It also has a particularity: "The aerodynamic shape of the dome makes it unnecessary to fix the house to the ground as it could never tip over," says Carbonell.

The attractive image of the dome is perfectly complemented by the interior spaces, very suggestive, spacious and organic, "something totally different from conventional homes with straight spaces", explains the architect. On the other hand, these spaces are usually more difficult to compartmentalize since, being curved, they ask to be diaphanous and have the minimum number of partitions so as not to generate strange corners and to be able to fully enjoy the sensation of the vaulted envelope.

The double-height house (ground floor where the living-dining room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom are located) also has a loft to house two bedrooms and another toilet. But it is also possible, according to Carbonell, to organize the house in several domes linked together, leaving each one for a room so that it does not require interior divisions. "It has the advantage that they are easily expandable by building another dome in the future when the needs of the family are greater," he explains.

Self-sufficient "low cost" housing

Designed with sustainability criteria, Ecoproyecta has incorporated bioclimatic strategies to condition the interior temperature of the house without consuming energy.

This self-sufficient house and "unplugged" from any urban energy network will have electricity all year round, sanitary hot water, heating for the winter and cooling for the summer for a total price of approximately 200 euros per year, Carbonell estimates. How do you get it? Through an architectural design that combines the incorporation of passive measures and correct thermal insulation with the introduction of renewable energies (photovoltaic installation, biomass boiler ...).

Thanks to a two-meter deep Canadian well, the interior of the house will have natural ventilation during the winter, not requiring much heating to achieve a comfortable temperature. "If we add to this the planting of aromatic species near the exterior intake of the well, we achieve that the air that enters the house is not only thermally comfortable, but is also naturally scented", Carbonell describes. "We must not forget water either, a scarce resource especially in Murcia where it rains little," he continues. This house collects rainwater and stores it in a tank for reuse. It also purifies residual water through a natural biological system that achieves clean water suitable for irrigation.

The implementation of energy measures will allow the construction of a geodesic house that does not consume energy for the price of a low-cost conventional house, around 700 / m2, calculates Ecoproyecta. "It must be taken into account that in the near future the buildings will have to be like this, they will have to consume very little energy by law. This is established by the European directive 31/2010 that marks the year 2020 as the date from which all the buildings will have to be of "almost zero energy consumption", Carbonell recalls.

Mimicry with the landscape

The house is part of the landscape and does not try to impose itself. The organic shape of the dome facilitates such integration, but in addition the architecture studio has tried to respect the existing trees, in this case almond trees, and also plans to plant other orange and apple trees, fruit species that will help to camouflage the house in its environment.

"On the other hand," adds Carbonell, "lime mortar will be used as the final coating, which will have a color similar to that of the local earth, with which we will be able to blend the house even more with its surroundings."

The uniqueness of these geodesic domes, patented by the American architect Buckminster Fuller in the 1950s, is highly developed in South America, especially in Argentina and Chile.
